Coffee Enemas- What you Need to Know

October 3, 2026 | Kiana Asherah
From hormone balance to nutrient storage, your liver plays a critical role in preparing your body for pregnancy and postpartum

Please note that I do not advise coffee enemas to be done during pregnancy. I am sharing the potential benefits that can be helpful when preparing your body to conceive a baby as well as for regular health maintenance.

I like to take a proactive approach on my health, instead of a reactive one by removing toxins before they build up enough to create issues.

Coffee Enemas Remove Toxins

Why is removing toxins before pregnancy important?

The liver is bombarded with absorbing and filtering every toxin that it encounters; from the air we breathe, the food we eat, the products we use in the home and on our bodies, heavy metals in the water, and microplastics. Alcohol, acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are extremely hard on the liver. Coffee enemas cleanse the liver.

If your liver is already bogged down and sluggish before pregnancy you could experience liver issues during pregnancy such as Cholestasis, HELLP Syndrome or acute fatty liver of pregnancy. These can be very dangerous and increase risk for baby and mom. Certain liver issues during pregnancy may influence a child’s risk of metabolic disorders; such as childhood obesity, insulin resistance, type II diabetes, as well as cardiovascular risk factors.

On a smaller scale a bombarded liver can impair the body’s ability to process certain substances. It can be a contributing factor to eczema and other skin issues, as well as low immunity for both mom and baby.

Key Ways the Liver Is Impacted During Pregnancy

1. Increased Hormone Processing

During pregnancy, levels of estrogen and progesterone rise dramatically. The liver must metabolize and help regulate these hormones. This increased workload can affect bile flow and liver function in some women.

2. Greater Nutrient Demands

The liver is responsible for:

  • Storing iron, vitamin A, B12, and other nutrients
  • Converting nutrients into forms the body can use
  • Producing proteins needed for blood clotting and fluid balance

Pregnancy increases the demand for these nutrients as the baby's organs, brain, and tissues develop.

3. Increased Blood Volume

A pregnant woman's blood volume increases by approximately 30–50%. The liver must produce more proteins, including albumin and clotting factors, to support this increased circulation.

4. Detoxification and Waste Processing

The liver continues its normal role of filtering toxins, medications, alcohol, and metabolic waste. It also helps process waste products generated by the increased metabolic activity of pregnancy.

5. Changes in Bile Flow

Higher estrogen levels can slow the flow of bile from the liver to the gallbladder. This can increase the risk of:

  • Gallstones
  • Sluggish digestion of fats
  • Pregnancy-related cholestasis (a liver condition causing intense itching)

What is a Coffee Enema?

(Information from: Pure Life, www.purelifeenema.com)

It was discovered in the 1940’s. And then researched by an MD, who found out why it worked so well to detox the liver and blood of poisons.   It is simply super clean coffee which is prepared, and then put into an enema bucket, and administered through the rectum via the enema tube and nozzle.  It is held in for 15 minutes as the coffee solution travels up to the liver, opening the bile ducts, and forcing the toxins held there to be released and finally expelled in the toilet after going to the bathroom.

While the coffee is traveling through the blood stream and brain, the blood and brain is also detoxed. That is why many people with migraines report that their headaches went away permanently after doing a coffee enema.

Water enemas are not the same as coffee enemas. Water enemas are for cleansing the colon. Water enemas will not be able to open up the bile ducts in the liver to release the toxins stored there.  For those who only want to keep their colon free from constipation and bacteria in the colon, water enemas work fine. You would not get the same results with a water enema for toxic overload of the body, as you would using a coffee enema. Water enemas have been around since ancient times of Plato and they were used during the times of Jesus as people would go to the river, take a gourd and stalk straw and insert the water into the rectum and cleanse their bowels.   They knew it was important for health if the bowels were unclean.

What does a Coffee Enema Do?

Coffee enemas were discovered in the 1930's by a German doctor and naturopath named Max Gerson.   He found that a coffee enema relieved discomfort in the body as it removed toxins from the liver and blood.

The coffee enema is a gallbladder flush and liver flush.  The coffee enema, without question, will provide prompt relief from pain – even severe pain.  Why is it such a great pain reliever? Because the toxins in the body pollute the blood, which in turn creates havoc in the body? Once the toxins are gone, the pain anywhere in the body is relieved.

When the body is detoxified, you can experience calmness, more vitality all over, normal bowel movements, mental clarity,  joint relief, headaches relieved.

Coffee enemas can strengthen the body overall by removing toxins from the blood.

Coffee enemas help eliminate bacteria’s and candida in the colon.  Coffee enemas can strengthen and tone the colon.

What You Will Need

Coffee Enema Kit

I purchased mine from PureLife and have had the canister for over 10 years. I just replace the tubing and nozzle.

How To Administer a Coffee Enema

First off, it is not as scary as it sounds. They are easy to do. I know it can be a bit intimidating but once you get used to them they are very relaxing. The first few can be painful or hard to hold in for the full 15 minutes because the colon is likely backed up with a lot of sludge. You can do a water flush beforehand to make it more comfortable to hold. Waiting until after you have your morning bowel movement can be helpful as well.

It is important that the coffee enema is done while laying on your  right side.  This is so that the coffee solution will flow into the portal vein easier and to the liver.

The coffee enema solution is to be held inside for 15 minutes, if possible.  The body’s entire blood supply passes through the liver about every 3-4 minutes.

1)  Prepare your enema coffee solution.

Boil 2 cups of distilled water in a pot. Once it starts boiling, add in 3 tbsp organic high quality ground coffee beans (light or medium roast). Let boil for 3-5 minutes. Cover with a lid and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain coffee, with a metal strainer, into a glass measuring cup large enough to hold 4 cups (my favorite measuring cups are from Ikea). Add more room temperature distilled water until you have 4 cups total with the coffee. This will make it the perfect temperature to use immediately.

2) Pour the 4 cups of coffee into your stainless steel enema bucket (make sure the clamp on the tubing is closed)

3) Release any air bubbles from the tubing into the sink or measuring cup.  Re-clamp.

4)   Find a place to lay down, such as the bathroom floor. I lay with a towel under me and one over me and have a pillow for my head on top of a mini biomat turned to high.

5)  Hang the enema bucket 12" to 18" above the surface where you are laying.

6)  Lay down on your right side.   Use coconut oil or some sort of lubrication on the enema nozzle.  Insert the lubricated nozzle into your rectum.

7)  Release the tubing clamp and allow the coffee solution to flow into the rectum.  Do not allow a fast flow.   Take your time and let the solution in slowly.

8)  When all the coffee is inserted, withdraw the enema tip.  Hold the coffee in for 15 minutes if you can.  Use breathing techniques if needed such as inhale for 4, exhale for 8.  You can also turn on a meditation if helpful.  If you have trouble holding it in, you can keep the enema tip in.

9)  After 15 minutes, release it into the toilet.

10)  Sanitizing the equipment is very important to kill parasites and bacteria. Allow soap and warm water to flow through the tube and canister. Rinse thoroughly until water runs clear. Mix 10% bleach to 90% water in the canister, allow it to run through the tubing and soak for 15 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Hang with the tubing open to dry thoroughly.

11) Make sure you hydrate with lots of water throughout the day and some electrolytes and/or coconut water.  Some people do 1 a month, some 1 week, some 1 a day for maintenance.
