5 Preconception Habits Most Women Overlook

August 16, 2026 | Kiana Asherah
Five recommendations and why they deserve a place in your daily routine before conceiving

Thinking about getting pregnant? Now is the perfect time to start preparing. While most women focus on pregnancy after they conceive, there is so much you can do beforehand to support your health, and strengthen your mindset for a positive pregnancy and motherhood experience.

Here are five recommendations and why they deserve a place in your daily routine before conceiving.

#1 Get Strong in Your Faith

You are preparing to bring another soul into this world—to become responsible for an entirely new human being. This is no small task. This is a gift from God. Motherhood is sacred work. It can be extremely challenging or it can be peaceful and joy filled, likely it will be some of both but I assume more of the latter would be the preference.

Pregnancy, labor, birth, and motherhood will ask you to surrender control again and again. There will be moments when you don't know what comes next. Moments when things don't go according to plan. Moments when you aren’t sure you can remain calm and patient.

Labor and birth will be very challenging if you resist. Surrendering to what your body is doing and how your baby and body are working together is a must to have a labor of ease. This can only be done with trust. Trust that God has given you exactly what you need to birth your baby.

How can you strengthen your connection with Jesus?

Create a daily practice, first thing in the morning—even just a few minutes.

Place your hand over your heart. Close your eyes. Take a slow breath.

Inhale for 8 counts.

Exhale for 4.

Feel your breath.

Quiet your mind.

Open your heart.

Invite Jesus into your heart and into this journey toward motherhood.

Surrender and Allow.

Here is a short prayer you can say…

“Jesus, I surrender what I cannot control.

I receive what You are giving me.

I trust where You are leading me.

In Your holy, powerful name, Amen”

#2 Remove Toxins with Coffee Enemas

Not as scary as it may sound…

Why is this important before pregnancy?

  • It cleanses the liver. The liver is bombarded with absorbing and filtering every toxin that it encounters; from the air we breathe, the food we eat, the products we use in the home and on our bodies, heavy metals in the water, and microplastics. Alcohol, acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are extremely hard on the liver.
  • If your liver is already clogged down and sluggish before pregnancy you could experience liver issues during pregnancy such as Cholestasis, HELLP Syndrome or acute fatty liver of pregnancy. These can be very dangerous and increase risk for baby and mom

Key Ways the Liver Is Impacted During Pregnancy

a) Increased Hormone Processing

During pregnancy, levels of estrogen and progesterone rise dramatically. The liver must metabolize and help regulate these hormones. This increased workload can affect bile flow and liver function in some women.

b) Greater Nutrient Demands

The liver is responsible for:

  • Storing iron, vitamin A, B12, and other nutrients
  • Converting nutrients into forms the body can use
  • Producing proteins needed for blood clotting and fluid balance

Pregnancy increases the demand for these nutrients as the baby's organs, brain, and tissues develop.

c) Increased Blood Volume

A pregnant woman's blood volume increases by approximately 30–50%. The liver must produce more proteins, including albumin and clotting factors, to support this increased circulation.

d) Detoxification and Waste Processing

The liver continues its normal role of filtering toxins, medications, alcohol, and metabolic waste. It also helps process waste products generated by the increased metabolic activity of pregnancy.

e) Changes in Bile Flow

Higher estrogen levels can slow the flow of bile from the liver to the gallbladder. This can increase the risk of:

  • Gallstones
  • Sluggish digestion of fats
  • Pregnancy-related cholestasis (a liver condition causing intense itching)

  • Possible Benefits of Coffee Enemas
  • Removal of toxins
  • Constipation, gas, and bloating relief
  • Detoxification of the liver and colon
  • Pain relief
  • Increased glutathione (antioxidant that removes free radicals)
  • Reduced risk of cancer
  • Increased energy
  • Reduced feelings of depression and anxiety
  • Cleansing of pharmaceuticals from the body
  • Immune System boost
  • Reduced yeast overgrowth
  • Parasite removal
  • Improved digestion
  • Released stored anger

*Coffee Enemas are not to be done during pregnancy

#4 Eat 1 Tbsp Seed Mixture Daily

½ cup pumpkin seeds

½ hemps seeds

½ black sesame seeds

½ chia seeds

½ sunflower seeds

¼ cup flax seeds

½ cup shredded coconut

Mix all seeds together and store in glass container in the refrigerator. All seeds should be raw and organic, nothing roasted or salted.

Soak ⅓ cup of seed mix with ⅓ cup of plant based milk overnight in the refrigerator. Can mix with plant based yogurt, berries and local honey.

Recipe from Liana Shanti at HMI Wellness®

Together, these nutrient-dense seeds provide healthy fats, plant protein, fiber, minerals, and antioxidants that help support:

  • Hormone balance
  • Egg quality and fertility
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Healthy digestion
  • Nutrient stores before conception
  • Baby's brain, nervous system, and overall development during pregnancy
  • Maternal energy and wellness throughout pregnancy

Pumpkin Seeds

Rich in zinc, iron, magnesium, and protein. Zinc supports egg quality, ovulation, hormone production, and healthy fetal development. Iron helps build healthy blood stores before and during pregnancy.

Hemp Seeds

A complete plant protein containing all essential amino acids. Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which support hormone balance, fertility, fetal brain development, and maternal tissue growth.

Black Sesame Seeds

Excellent source of calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, and antioxidants. Traditionally used to nourish the reproductive system and support healthy bones, blood production, and mineral stores during pregnancy.

Chia Seeds

Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, calcium, and antioxidants. Help support hormone health, digestive regularity, blood sugar balance, hydration, and baby's brain and nervous system development.

Sunflower Seeds

High in vitamin E, folate, selenium, and healthy fats. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that supports egg health and reproductive wellness, while folate is essential for early fetal development.

Flax Seeds

Contain omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and lignans that may support healthy estrogen metabolism and hormone balance before conception. Fiber also promotes digestive health and regular elimination.

Shredded Coconut

Provides healthy fats, fiber, and minerals such as manganese. Healthy fats support hormone production, sustained energy, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins important for fertility and pregnancy.

#5 Rebounding

Benefits of Rebounding Before Conception

Rebounding (gentle bouncing on a mini trampoline) can be a fun, low-impact way to support overall wellness while preparing your body for pregnancy.

Supports Lymphatic Circulation

Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system relies on movement to circulate lymph fluid. Rebounding encourages lymph flow, which helps transport immune cells and remove metabolic waste products.

Improves Cardiovascular Fitness

Building cardiovascular endurance before pregnancy can support overall energy levels, circulation, and physical resilience as the body's demands increase during pregnancy.

Promotes Healthy Blood Flow

The gentle up-and-down movement encourages circulation throughout the body, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues, including reproductive organs.

Supports Pelvic and Core Stability

Maintaining strength in the core, pelvic floor, hips, and legs before conception can help create a strong foundation for the physical changes of pregnancy.

May Support Hormonal Health

Regular exercise is associated with improved insulin sensitivity, stress management, and overall hormonal balance, all of which can support reproductive health.

Encourages Stress Reduction

Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins and can help reduce stress, which may positively influence overall well-being during the preconception period.

Low-Impact and Joint-Friendly

Rebounding provides movement with less impact on joints compared with many other forms of exercise, making it accessible for many individuals.

Supports Healthy Weight Management

Maintaining a healthy weight before pregnancy is associated with improved fertility outcomes and a lower risk of certain pregnancy complications.

Builds Stamina for Pregnancy and Parenthood

Developing a consistent movement practice before conception can help support endurance, energy, and physical strength throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Simple Preconception Rebounding Routine

  • 5–10 minutes daily for beginners
  • Gentle bouncing rather than vigorous jumping
  • Focus on relaxed breathing and good posture
  • Gradually increase to 15–20 minutes as tolerated
  • Bellicon or Cellerciser are my two highly recommended rebounders but there are many less expensive ones you can start with

These 5 recommendations are in addition to taking the appropriate supplements, and eating a healthy, low fat, gluten free, plant based diet.
